BOYS VARSITY SWIM TAKES 4TH PLACE AT CIF!!!
New CIF meet records, Mira Costa team records, and All-American cuts abound as Mira Costa Varsity swimmers make one of their strongest CIF showings in history! CIF-SS Division 2 competition took place last week with prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. Costa sent 17 swimmers this year, qualifying three relays on both the men’s and women’s teams. Junior Alex Crisera set two new Div 2 records in the 100 back (52.87) and 50 free (22.59, leading off the 4x50 freestyle relay) during prelims! At finals, she placed 1st in the 100 free (48.92, only .05 seconds off of breaking her own meet record of 48.87 set last year) and took 2nd place in the 100 back. Crisera’s 100 back and 50/100 free times are All-American automatic cuts and her 100 back and 50 free relay lead-off are new Costa records as well!
Junior Kai Bathurst placed 2nd in the 200 free (1:38.83, narrowly missing 1st place by .15 seconds!) and came in 6th in the 100 free (46.38). His 200 free is an All-American consideration cut and both the 200 and 100 set new school records! Senior Andrew White had an excellent final CIF showing placing 4th in the 100 fly (50.71) and 6th in the 100 back (50.92, new Costa record!). Junior Colin Le continued his sprint freestyle prowess tying for 2nd in the 50 freestyle (21.15, just .19 out of 1st place!) and placing 11th in the 100 backstroke. Le broke his own 50 free school record!
The boys’ 200 freestyle relay placed 1st in an All-American time of 1:24.77! Le led off with a 21.34, followed by Senior Jack Kittay (21.55), White (21.13), and Bathurst anchored with a 20.75 split! They entered the meet as the #7 seed and dropped over 3 seconds between prelims and finals! The boys’ 400 free relay, this time led by Kittay, then Le, White, and Bathurst, placed 5th with an All-American consideration time of 3:08.34, dropping 4 seconds from their 7th place seed time. Both relays set new Costa records as well!
The girls’ 200 free relay placed 2nd with a time of 1:36.55 (slightly slower than their prelim time of 1:36.44) and earned an All-American consideration cut! The girls dropped over 2 seconds from their 4th place seed time of 1:38.69. Crisera led off with a 22.81, followed by Sophomore Leigh Lyter (24.71), Senior Mona Stone (24.83), and Junior Riley Farrell anchored in a split of 24.20. The girls’ 200 medley relay placed 8th (1:48.93), dropping over a second from their 10th place seed time. Junior Grace Barnhill swam backstroke (28.98), Farrell breaststroke (31.66), Stone butterfly (25.98), and Crisera freestyle (22.31). Both relays also set new school records! These swimmers also qualified for the CA State Championship meet this weekend in Clovis, which Costa will not attend. Congratulations to all swimmers and coaches on an incredibly fast, record-setting season!
Jacob Haim, Sophomore competed in the CIF Division 2 Dive Meet on Monday, May 7th at the Riverside Aquatics Complex. He placed 3rd in D2 which qualified him for the finals on Saturday, May 12th. Jacob again placed 3rd amongst the top 12 boys across all four divisions and secured himself a spot at the State Championship. Jacob is Mira Costa’s first diver ever to make it to the State competition. He will be headed to Fresno this week and will compete on Friday, May 18th.
Good luck Jacob and Go Costa!!!
COSTA TAKES 2ND PLACE, SETS 5 NEW LEAGUE RECORDS AT BAY LEAGUE!
Varsity swimmers finished the season with a HUGE splash last week by setting five new Bay League records at the Championship meet! Varsity men and women came in second place behind Peninsula, with Redondo finishing third and Palos Verdes taking fourth. She later broke a 2015 record held by Pen by 2 seconds in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.55. Junior Kai Bathurst was also on fire breaking a 2011 200 freestyle record held by Palos Verdes with his time of 1:41.04.

The 200 free team of Colin Le, Andrew White, Jack Kittay, and Kai Bathurst came in 1st place with a time of 1:27.99, breaking a 9 year old record also held by Mira Costa! The same Fab Four, this time swimming with Bathurst as the lead, then Kittay, Le, and White as the anchor, finished the meet by breaking a 2011 record held by PV in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:12.35. Both relays are seeded in 7th place at CIF-SS D2 this Friday - good luck boys!
